How to use the takeaway calorie calculator

  1. Enter the calorie limit you want to use for the meal.
  2. Type a specific item name, such as “chicken burger” or “large fries”.
  3. Add the quantity and use “Add another item” for sides, sauces and drinks.
  4. Select “Estimate my meal” to see the total and whether it is over or under your limit.

How takeaway calories are estimated

The calculator matches each description to a built-in database of typical servings. A specific description normally produces a more useful estimate than a broad word. For example, “large fries” is more informative than “potatoes”. When a close match is unavailable, the tool uses a broad food-category estimate and tells you.

Actual restaurant calories can differ because recipes, portion sizes, toppings, oils and sauces vary. Where a restaurant publishes an official calorie figure, use that value in preference to this estimate. Calorie information is especially relevant to UK diners because qualifying large businesses in England must display calories at the point where customers choose food.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include sauces and drinks?

Yes. Sauces, milkshakes, soft drinks and extras can materially change the meal total.

Why does my result say broad estimate?

The item was not closely matched. Try adding the food type, size or cooking method.

Is the result an official restaurant figure?

No. It is an independent estimate unless you separately verify it against restaurant nutrition information.
